In the early hours of Thursday morning (August 15), police officers were called to a traffic accident on Blankener Straße in Bünde. When the officers arrived, a heavily damaged Opel Astra and Skoda Fabia were in a head-on collision at the junction with Elsestraße.
According to the people involved in the accident, a 60-year-old woman from Kirchlengern was driving her Opel Astra along Blankener Straße towards Levisionstraße at around 05:35. As she intended to turn left into Elsestraße, she noticed two pedestrians walking on the sidewalk of Blankener Straße. As the 60-year-old assumed that they wanted to cross Elsestraße, she braked her vehicle so hard during the turning maneuver that she came to a halt in the opposite lane. At this point, a 62-year-old woman from Bünde was driving in the opposite lane in the direction of Wasserbreite. The Skoda driver tried to brake hard but was unable to prevent a collision with the Opel.
The Kirchlengeran woman was uninjured in the accident, while the 62-year-old was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. Both vehicles were no longer roadworthy and had to be towed away from the scene of the accident. The damage to property is estimated at around 11,000 euros. The junction area was closed for around an hour while the accident was being investigated.
