(um) Civilian officers from Herford police noticed an offender on a high-quality pedelec on Herrmannstraße on Wednesday (05.02.). The man had secured the expensive vehicle to a lamp post with a lock in an exemplary manner to prevent theft. The intervening officers, who primarily combat street crime, also recognized the 36-year-old as a prolific offender in property crimes and decided to carry out an identity check. In this case, the man from Herford again failed to convince the officers with clear proof of ownership of the pedelec. Instead, he stated that he had found the bike unlocked at a location and had only been riding it for a short time. The officers then had to seize the bike, which cost over 3000 euros, to secure its ownership. In addition, the officers later checked the bike's individual number at the police station. They checked with several bike dealers of the brand on the basis of the type and found the bike at a local bike dealer. The buyer was thus identified and could be contacted. He had noticed the theft of his bike a few days earlier on Otternbuschweg and had not yet been able to report it to the police. He was delighted to get the bike back. In this context, the police would like to point out that the documents relating to the purchase of a high-quality bicycle or pedelec should be kept in a safe place, not least for insurance reasons. In the event of theft, the individual numbers of the two-wheelers are then available. The investigation into the case is continuing, as the man from Herford is strongly suspected of particularly serious theft and receiving stolen goods due to further offenses.
