The cycle route on Nünningsweg - between Burgsteinfurt and Borghorst - has been in place and signposted accordingly since May 2021. Since then, there have been repeated complaints from cyclists on the road. The subject of the complaint is the volume of traffic caused by cars. Car drivers are apparently unaware of the legal situation on the cycle lane. This is because only cars whose drivers are residents are allowed to drive on Nünningsweg. Driving is prohibited for all other cars.

This was also shown by a police spot check on Tuesday (15.11.22) on the cycle route. Officers from the Steinfurt police station carried out checks there between 4.30 pm and 6.30 pm. A total of over 30 infringements were detected and punished. During the control interviews, it became clear that most drivers were not aware of the traffic ban on the cycle lane. In principle, motor vehicles are prohibited from driving on cycle lanes. This can only be restricted by additional signage - as in the case of Nünningsweg.
There are also other rules that motorists must adhere to on cycle lanes - if they are allowed to use them: The maximum speed limit is 30 kilometers per hour. This is specified by the bicycle road traffic sign. And: cyclists always have priority over motorized road users in this area.

The attached photo from the Steinfurt police shows the markings and signs for the cycle lane on Nünningsweg, at the access road Auf dem Windhorst in Borghorst.
