Peter Mosch (56) is to become the new State Director of Criminal Investigation at the Ministry of the Interior. This was decided by the state cabinet on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at the suggestion of Minister Herbert Reul. The Chief Criminal Director will take over the duties of his predecessor Johannes Hermanns, who has moved to Cologne as Chief of Police, on May 1, 2024. This makes Mosch the highest-ranking criminal investigator in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Interior Minister Herbert Reul: "As a highly experienced criminalist and experienced manager, Peter Mosch is the ideal candidate for the post of State Director of Criminal Investigation. He is a thoroughbred police officer who knows how to continue the fight against organized crime, clan crime and child abuse in a strategically intelligent manner. The work of the criminal investigation department will change in the coming years as a result of technological progress. Peter Mosch will continue to digitalize and modernize the North Rhine-Westphalian criminal investigation department."

Mosch was most recently head of the department for child abuse and special criminal matters at the Ministry of the Interior. Peter Mosch: "The North Rhine-Westphalian criminal investigation department is facing massive challenges. My aim is to continue to make the criminal investigation department fit for the future in terms of personnel, organization and technology in these difficult times. It is particularly important to recruit qualified personnel who can successfully conduct investigations. After all, the criminal investigation department, as an important part of the entire North Rhine-Westphalia police force, is a cornerstone for the security of the citizens of North Rhine-Westphalia."

Born in Essen, Mosch began his career as a police constable trainee in 1986 in Linnich. After criminal investigation training in 1994 and subsequent studies at the German Police University, he joined the higher service in 2003 and held various management positions, e.g. at the criminal investigation department in Oberhausen and subsequently at the State Office for Training, Further Education and Personnel Affairs of the NRW Police (LAFP NRW). Among other things, he headed the Department for Training and Further Education. In 2020, Mosch moved to the Ministry of the Interior.

As State Director of Criminal Investigation, Peter Mosch is responsible for the specialist supervision of the North Rhine-Westphalia State Office of Criminal Investigation and the 47 district police authorities as well as for the implementation of the crime strategy. This includes analyzing the current crime situation, evaluating crime trends and developing concepts to combat crime.
