Late on Saturday evening (21 July), an attentive witness observed two people apparently tampering with a cigarette vending machine on the corner of Brandhorststraße and Schindelweg. At around 11.30 p.m., the witness heard suspicious noises from outside and was able to observe two masked men at the vending machine. One of the men tried to break open the slot for inserting banknotes with a tool (presumably an angle grinder and screwdriver).
When the witness spoke to the two men and approached them with a flashlight, they both fled on foot along Schindelweg in an as yet unknown direction. After the police were alerted, the damaged vending machine was checked and the screwdriver left at the scene was seized as evidence. The two perpetrators did not get hold of any stolen goods. The police are asking other witnesses who can provide further information about the attempted break-in to call 05221-8880.
