After around 10 months since the start of the test in four pilot authorities, the NRW Ministry of the Interior has drawn a positive conclusion and, among other things, determined that the security service of selected district police authorities should be fully equipped with the DEIG.
After the pilot at the North police station, the Central police station of the Dortmund police department will be the next station to go live at the beginning of 2022. By the end of May 2022, all other police officers on duty in Dortmund and Lünen will gradually be trained and the police stations will be equipped with the new equipment.
The new head of the Directorate for Emergency Response/Employment and therefore responsible for the security service of Dortmund Police Department, Senior Police Director Achim Stankowitz, points to the preventative effect of the DEIG and the associated reduction in injuries to all those involved: "During the trial phase, the DEIG has been used 42 times in Dortmund so far, and in only 13 cases was it necessary to fire a shot. The threat and display of the arc alone has meant that one or two attacks have not been carried out or escalations have been avoided."
In addition to the technical operation and handling of the DEIG, the police officers also receive training in communication during operations and the legal basics.
Since the task forces usually support each other across locations, the Taser can also be used at other guard locations.
