Selfkant-Süsterseel - Around three weeks ago, a man from Süsterseel placed an advertisement in the newspaper looking for a carer for ten days. A previously unknown woman responded to the advertisement and came for an interview about a week later. The senior citizen then decided to employ the woman as a carer. Last Sunday (November 17), the woman started work at around 8 p.m. and also spent the night in the old man's house. When he got up on Tuesday morning (November 19), he discovered that the caregiver had left the house with cash and a collection of coins.
The unknown woman was around 40 years old, called herself Lisa, had long dark blonde hair and had arrived in a white vehicle, presumably a Volkswagen.
Who made suspicious observations in the area of Nachtigallenweg or Karl-Arnold-Straße during the period in question and/or can provide information on the identity of the unknown woman and the vehicle? In this case, the police criminal investigation department in Geilenkirchen is responsible on 02452 920 0. You can also provide information via the Heinsberg police website or via the direct link: https://polizei.nrw/artikel/anzeige-hinweis.
To protect yourself from such or similar crimes, the police advise:
There are criminals who try to steal from elderly people, especially those who are alone. These people, who are often talented actors, use a need for care, the search for domestic help or other situations to get into the house and steal from the elderly. We therefore give you tips on how to protect yourself from such acts. Also talk to your parents, grandparents or elderly people around you about this.
- Do not let strangers into your apartment or house, at least ask them to show ID and take a photo or write out the most important details. These are strangers and it's better to be safe than sorry. A trustworthy person will always understand.
- Invite a person you trust to a first meeting or a first overnight stay with the caregiver.
- Do not show or tell anyone where you keep money or valuables
- Hire well-known official companies to carry out care work, the employees there have been checked and are reliable.
- Suitable companies are also provided by health insurance companies and care insurance companies
- If you have been the victim of a crime, report it to the police in any case.
