(jd) A woman from Enger received a call from a stranger on Monday (April 7) at around 12.30 pm. He told her that her grandson had caused an accident in which a child had died. By paying over 90,000 euros, she could prevent her grandson from being remanded in custody. The woman was put under pressure several times during the conversation, and her alleged grandson also spoke to her on the phone. She was then instructed to hand over the bail money in Bielefeld. The victim then called her daughter on the telephone number she knew and the fraud was discovered. The woman from Enger filed a complaint.
In this context, the Herford police once again advise relatives or loved ones of elderly people to talk to them about the methods used by fraudsters and thus raise their awareness.
If you are called yourself:
- Be suspicious if someone asks you for money over the phone.
- End the call as soon as the person you are talking to, often a supposed grandson, asks you for money and do not allow yourself to be put under pressure.
- Make sure that the caller is really a relative. Call them back on a number you know.
- Do not hand over any money to unknown persons. - Inform the police immediately if you think a call is suspicious.
- Contact the police in any case if you have become a victim and file a complaint.
