On Tuesday, November 29, the Olpe district police authority took part in the cross-border search and control day, which was held as part of the "Aachen Declaration". In the agreement, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands have agreed to cooperate intensively in the fight against international gangs of burglars. The declaration was signed in October by the Interior Ministers of Rhineland-Palatinate, North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony and Federal Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière with their counterparts from Belgium and the Netherlands. The core of this agreement is an improved exchange of information, improved cooperation in investigation procedures and joint controls.
In the period from 13:00 to 21:00, a total of 32 police officers from the Olpe police authority were deployed, who were actively supported by 22 riot police officers from Cologne. The 54 officers deployed checked suspicious vehicles and their occupants at various locations throughout the Olpe district. The aim of the law enforcement officers deployed was to unsettle mobile offenders operating nationwide and to maintain the pressure of being on the lookout, but also to gain information, prevent break-ins and punish traffic violations. During the checks, 469 vehicles and 509 people were checked. The police did not catch any suspected burglars during the checks. However, the officers did establish the personal details of several suspicious persons from outside the district because they could not plausibly explain why they were in the Olpe district. The officers also recorded 68 traffic violations, most of which were in the fine range.
"We made our regional contribution to the cross-border operation with the priority checks in the Olpe district. Together with our colleagues in the police authorities in our neighboring districts, but also in the neighboring countries, we have sent a clear signal against traveling offenders. These mobile offenders can never be sure when and where they will be checked. That's why we will continue to make pinpricks against burglars in the future with further control days," explained the head of operations of the Olpe district police authority, police councillor Mike Schnitzler.
In addition to the measures taken by the police, every citizen can help to prevent property crime by successfully securing their own windows and doors against burglary. The district police authority provides free and independent information on how to secure your own "four walls" against burglars. In addition, any suspicious activity in your own home should be reported to the police immediately by calling the emergency number 110.
