In August, the Ministry of the Interior and Local Authorities announced that a total of 10,000 high-tech protective vests would be procured for the NRW police, with the state of NRW providing over ten million euros for this purpose. On Monday, 17 October 2016, the Unna district police authority was able to collect its new protective vests from the police clothing center in Lünen. The 72 vests are now being distributed to the police vehicles so that they are quickly available at the scene of an emergency. The new vests have a particularly high level of protection and can also withstand rapid-fire weapon fire. Weighing less than eight kilograms and offering maximum freedom of movement, they provide the greatest possible protection. The plate carriers are made of abrasion-resistant polyamide. The ballistic protective plates are made of high-density polyethylene. The underarm protective vests, with which every police officer in North Rhine-Westphalia was already equipped and continues to be equipped, protect against gunfire and attacks with stabbing weapons. Head of the authorities Michael Makiolla praised the fact that the police officers in the district of Unna are now even better protected in extremely dangerous situations, such as terrorist attacks or rampages.
