Organization of the Märkischer Kreis Police

The Märkischer Kreis district police authority reports to the district administrator of the Märkischer Kreis district.

The area is identical to the municipal boundaries of the Märkischer Kreis and covers 1 061 km². The police are responsible for the safety of 412,120 inhabitants (as of 31.12.2018).

The district in its current form was created in the course of the municipal territorial reform on January 1, 1975, when the entire district of Lüdenscheid and large parts of the district of Iserlohn, the previously independent city of Iserlohn and the Balve area, which had previously belonged to the district of Arnsberg, were merged.

637 police officers (as of 01.09.2019) ensure security in the Märkischer Kreis district. Their duties include fighting crime, averting danger, combating the main causes of accidents and monitoring other traffic regulations.

The Märkischer Kreis is divided into 46 districts, which are overseen by district officers.

The staff also includes 80 government employees, 25 district employees and officials and 3 state officials, who mainly carry out clerical tasks.

Around 100,000 operations occur every year, which are handled professionally by the emergency services.

The organizational structure of the police authorities in North Rhine-Westphalia is based on the NRW Police Organization Act.

The head of the Märkischer Kreis (MK) district police authority is the incumbent district administrator. The head of the police department (AlPol) reports to him and is responsible for the official and technical supervision of the employees. He has overall technical responsibility for the district's police force.
