You're full of anticipation for the upcoming European Championship match or, after going to the stadium, you're still thinking about the exciting soccer match you watched live just before. And suddenly there's this loud bang - you've been involved in a traffic accident!
Your thoughts of the game are suddenly gone. Now everything in your head is about the accident. Have I injured myself? How are the other people involved? How do I behave correctly? What do I even have to do?
The NRW police have compiled a few important points for you so that you can act with confidence:
1. Secure the scene of the accident after the accident!
- Switch on the hazard warning lights on the vehicle

- Put up a warning triangle: In urban areas, it must be placed at least 50 meters from the accident site, on rural roads about 100 meters away and on freeways about 150 to 300 meters away. Be careful on bends!

Take care of the people involved and inform the emergency services (emergency number 112) and the police (emergency number 110)!
3. Please keep calm!
An accident is annoying, but not a reason to insult or even injure each other. Not even if you were looking forward to the European Championship match, the stadium tickets are expensive or you're coming to the public viewing later!
4. The kick-off of the European Championship match is coming up soon, time is running out and you still have to deal with the settlement of the damage or even the injured!
If you leave the scene of an accident without permission, you are committing a criminal offense - a hit-and-run can be punished with a fine or up to three years in prison.
5. You are all uninjured, there is only minor material damage and your vehicle is still roadworthy?
Then make sure that you do not obstruct traffic unnecessarily and move your vehicle to the side of the road/to a nearby parking lot. Especially during the European Championships, the traffic situation may already be more tense depending on the location of the accident. Think along with us!

Then make sure you exchange all the important information for settling the claim. Take photos, record the names, addresses and telephone numbers of all parties involved as well as the insurance details. When recording names, ask to see the driver's license or ID card.
7. In the event of a traffic accident involving a foreign vehicle, the usual rules of conduct apply.
To make it easier to settle the claim, you should ask for the other party's green insurance card. This is proof of insurance for international motor traffic. In the case of accident victims from EU countries, the license plate number is generally sufficient for the settlement.
