Police Commissioner Gregor Lange has been in charge of Dortmund Police Headquarters since March 2014. He was born in Dortmund in 1962, is married and has three children.
Professional background:
Gregor Lange studied law and history at the University of Bonn. After passing his second state examination in law, he joined the state government in Arnsberg in 1993. In 1998, he moved to the North Rhine-Westphalian Ministry of the Interior, where he worked on political extremism as a consultant at the Office for the Protection of the Constitution until 2003.
From 2003 to 2009, Lange headed up the "Mont-Cenis" training academy in Herne. From 2009 to 2010, he was responsible for human resources, again at the Arnsberg district government. Prior to his appointment as Chief of Police in Dortmund, Gregor Lange was departmental director at the Münster district government and responsible for regional development, urban planning, municipal supervision and the economy.
On March 1, 2014, Lange became Dortmund's Chief of Police as the direct successor to Norbert Wesseler.
In 2017, he took over the chairmanship of the Working Group of Police Presidents in Germany. This body discusses and debates security-related issues of nationwide importance, with Gregor Lange managing the coordination and planning from the Ruhr region.
Since the end of May 2023, Gregor Lange has been a member of the Advisory Board for Participation and Integration, which is chaired by Integration Minister Josefine Paul and State Secretary Lorenz Bahr. The advisory board advises the NRW state government on issues relating to immigration, participation and integration.
Special areas of focus:
As police commissioner of the largest city in the Ruhr region, Gregor Lange has placed a clear focus on combating right-wing extremism and established a "zero tolerance strategy". In 2015, he founded the "Right" special commission, which is now known nationwide for its repression and control pressure against right-wing extremism.
In particular in Dortmund's Nordstadt district, a multicultural part of Dortmund with a higher criminogenic burden, Gregor Lange has established the "zero tolerance strategy" of NRW Interior Minister Herbert Reul. The pressure on drug dealing, criminal structures and clan crime is kept permanently high with regular focus and control operations.
